"RAW hand-picks and spotlights local artistic talent in film, fashion, music, visual art, hair & makeup artistry, and performance art. With artists from all genres in each showcase, RAW events come together to form an amazing one night circus of creativity.

What can you expect when attending RAW Showcase? We screen an independent film (usually a short, webisode or music video), a fashion show from an up-and-coming local designer, a musical performance, an art gallery featuring several independent visual artists, and performance art (comedy/dance/fire dancers, you name it...). You'll get a little taste of everything. Combine all this creativity with drinks, fun, and good company!"

On January 6, 2012, in the artists’ studios at 450 Harrison Street, Corporeal Constructions opens to the public and is on view for just one evening. This show culls from the Master of Fine Arts program at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the artists in the show reflect various stages in the program. Corporeal Constructions presents artwork that illustrates intangible ideas, experiences, and memories transfigured into physical forms. The sculptures, paintings, and photographs in the show represent the performative act of ideas and memories passing into, through, and out of the body. The result of such influences and processes are evocative images that possess both strong emotion and power. Artists in the show include Huaiyu Chou, Jodie Goodnough, Katrina Majkut, Monica Lynn Manoski, Sarah Pollman, Qing Song, and Ashley Wood.

Design Nearby is an exhibition series for people who love design. The series showcases inventive craft and clever aesthetics, from graphics on a shirt to mobiles made of felt to woodblock wallpaper. Design Nearby highlights works in various disciplines, with a focus on Boston-area artists and designers. These works are available for purchase. This year’s exhibit is entitled Command-P for the Macintosh keyboard shortcut that allows one to print the digital contents of their screen. Command-P explores the dichotomy between traditional and contemporary printing techniques. Each artist in this exhibit uses digital manipulation and classic printing methods in varying degrees to create their work. Whether manually screen-printed computer illustrations or die-cut letterpress prints, the pieces in this show represent the wide spectrum of work celebrating the art of printed matter.

Call for Submission for the MFA 2012 Community Arts Initiative: The Artist Project

The Artist Project is a collaborative exhibition between an established artist, eight after-school community organizations in the Boston area, the MFA, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (SMFA). It culminates in a 6 month prominent exhibition in the Linde Family Wing of the MFA. The selected Artist will receive a substantial honorarium as well as budget for supplies relating to the project.

Artists must submit their proposals by Friday, January 13, 2012.

Sunday August 7, 2011 from 5-9PM, 3Scoops will host internationally celebrated photographer Jim Dow for his current book tour for AMERICAN STUDIES: A TRIBUTE TO THE 2011 RED SOX SEASON and he will be available for signing. The exhibit of Dow’s work from the book will be on display at 3Scoops from August 7th through October 27th.

Jim Dow is an internationally exhibited artist represented in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, J. Paul Getty Museum, Library of Congress, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Dow has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, LEF Foundation, Mellon Foundation, and the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship among many other grants and commissions. His work has been published in Marking the Land (2007) and Where We Live: Photographs from the Berman Collection (2006) as well as in international magazines and academic and fine art journals. Dow has taught at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts for over twenty years.

A leading American photographer, Dow pushes his viewer to reconsider familiar surroundings and discern the beauty and cultural history hidden in a random space. In his latest book, American Studies, Dow gives us unpeopled spaces, each resonating with a unique and telling history.

Local pop singer, Casey Desmond, took illustration classes at The Art Institute Of Boston where she met her best friend Tofu Squirrel. Over the past year, Tofu Squirrel and Casey Desmond have been combining forces in order to bring Casey's world to life through illustrations. They created a psychedelic space world full of pink trees, flying caterpillars, blue deer, space plants, crystals, synths and more. With the help of Tofu Squirrel, close friends, and family, Casey Desmond was able to create sets, costumes, visuals, and more for her music video "Talking To God". What some of you may not know is that Casey is not only a phenomenal singer, she's also a song writer, art director, designer, illustrator, and she designs and sews all of her own stage costumes. For a low budget music video, the song and visuals are unique and stunning. Casey Desmond is one of a kind. Check it out:

The Distillery Gallery is pleased to announce “Dots Per Inch”, an exhibit of printmaking and graphic design. This show focuses not only on techniques, but also the creativity, artistic integrity, and entrepreneurial spirit involved with such disciplines. Works by independent designers will showcase the attention to aesthetics that goes into their craft, whether it be traditional letterpress, screen printing, or modern digital design. Along with works of various mediums displayed in both proper gallery fashion and salon-style, the show will also include a section of wall space dedicated to collaborative installation where artists will print layers of mixed imagery directly onto the wall surface.

The opening reception will provide the public with an opportunity to meet the artists, ask questions about processes, and purchase independent, locally-made goods from the “merch table” set up in the middle of the gallery. Exhibitors include: AntiDesigns, Dance Party Massacre, David Clemente, Dyslexic Press, Repeat Press, Carrie Siegel, Union Press, & James Weinberg.

Joshua Baptista attended the Accademia di Belle Arte in Viterbo, Italy, in 1998 before earning a bachelor's degree in art from the Montserrat College of Art. In 2005, he attended the Massachusetts College of Art, and in 2009 he earned a master's of fine arts from American University.

In recent years, his work has been exhibited by Enclave Arts, the Katzen Museum, Space 242 in Boston, the Fuller Museum, the Warehouse in DC, as well as RFD Gallery in Swainsboro, Georgia. Since 2007, his work has appeared in over ten different shows, seven different publications, and it is included in two permanent collections. Baptista's work has earned him three different awards, including an Award of Excellence from Montserrat College of Art in 1998.

Here's a few snaps from last Sunday's SOWA Open Market. It was a beautiful day, perfect fall weather. This week, SOWA featured the local artisan group Boston Handmade (as several members were vending at market that day), plus Dogs Dogs Dogs! Sunday was "Dogtastic" Day at SOWA! Now to be fair, every Sunday I've ever been at SOWA has seemed like a "dog day" to me. Many folks bring their pooches to SOWA any/every Sunday of the SOWA season. But this Sunday was extra-special because some of the dogs were in —ta-da! —costume!

Whether you are a fan of dogs in costume or not, one simply cannot deny the sweetness of the little doggie above, Greta (all dressed up as a Matryoshka). Seriously cute!

Gallery 9 in Norwood, MA is seeking artists to create an original work for a show in their Norwood gallery. Interepret the theme "Looking Up" however you see it for this non-juried, all-inclusive show. Entry fee is $10 and a 10" x 10" canvas is provided on which to create your work. All work must be for sale, with prices determined by gallery management and the artist at time of drop-off. Only pieces done on this provided canvas and size will be displayed in the show, and standard commission of 60% to the artist and 40% to the gallery will be offered for all show sales. 10% off all gallery proceeds will be donated to the Norwood food pantry. The Hourglass Tattoo & Pabst Blue Ribbon Art Gallery is preparing to throw their July show!! For this upcoming show, they have teamed up with Shayna Yasuhara, aka "Shayna Shenanigans", artists and founder of Boston's award winning female art collective, Paint Pens in Purses. The result was, “Strange World”, a showcase of dark, lovely and intriguing works from six emerging and established low-brow and non-traditional artists. On August 7th MEME gallery is hosting The Street Museum - a ONE day transformation of The Wall located in Central Square at 567 Mass Ave.

Local artists, community members, neighborhood youth, and passersby will be invited to be a part of The Street Museum. Participants will create a stencil of their own to add to the collaborative, evolving mural. Everything needed to make a stencil will be provided and available at MEME, located at 55 Norfolk Street.

The Wall is a truly inspiring, ever changing space, and is the only legal wall in Cambridge for street artists to create their work.

MEME's mission, to be "a space for ephemeral art to be made and witnessed," and the close proximity of The Wall to the gallery make it perfect place to broaden MEME’s reach into public spaces.

SOUNDSCAPE is an ongoing exploration of the BLiNK Project, based upon an unprecedented synergistic interaction of music, visual art, architecture, and sound engineering. It’s basis is music, where scenarios for performance are created, rather than simply arranging musical content.

Our next performance will be at both Caprice and Underbar Lounge. Musicians play in the 2 clubs simultaneously. A lead group will perform upstairs. Their sound will be transmitted downstairs, and played on speakers throughout the space. Musicians downstairs will play in synchronization with the lead group’s sound. We are stretching an orchestra out, and you become your own composer/conductor, shaping your musical experience by moving through the space.

Circus Day in America new art by Patt Kelley

For the past few months I've been working on nine pieces for The Shelburne Museum in Vermont. The exhibit, entitled "Circus Day in America" showcases the sights, sounds and smells during the heyday of the circus 1870-1950. On display will be objects from the museum's own collection as well as from The John and Mable Ringling Museum. I've seen some of the posters and photographs that will be on display, and they're amazing.

For my part in the exhibit I created seven posters of noteable sideshow freaks throughout history. Serpentina, Grady Stiles the Lobster Boy, and siamese twins Millie Christine to name a few. Not to mention a nearly four foot tall poster of four legged woman Myrtle Corbin. Along with the posters I made two sculptures. One of armless lady Frances O'Connor holding a smouldering cigarette inbetween her toes, and the other of JoJo the Dog Faced Boy (using my wife's haircut clippings to cover his face and hands.)

The exhibit will be open for the museum's entire 2010 season.

I'll be part of a six person show at Space 242 from this Friday March 26 through April 23.

My show is called:

Mixtape: Song Lyrics Reinterpreted
9 different pieces based on lyrics from songs.

I have no musical talent whatsoever,... yet have always wanted to do a cover song, so I took some lyrics from some of my favorite songs and did my spin on them.

Also featured will be some new work by 5 other amazing artists

SPACE 242, Boston’s Low Brow Destination, proudly announces its March exhibitions: SIX PACK! – including mini solo exhibitions by six area artists: Jennifer Lewis, George Pfromm II, Dave MacMahon, Joshua Baptista, Patt Kelley, and Christopher Lyles. The exhibition, on view March 26 through April 23 includes paintings and illustrations by Boston-area artists. The opening reception, Friday, March 26 runs from 6-8pm, is free and open to the public with RSVP at www.space242.com . An artist talk will be held Friday, April 23 from 7-8pm. Gallery hours are Friday evenings 6:30-8pm.
